Playful with toys? She LOVES stuffies that squeak.

Birdiness: She’s very birdy.

Interactions

Adults (Men-Women) in home: She loves both equally.

Little Kids: She’s friendly, but can steal toys from toddlers, so a home with kids older than 8 would be best for her.

Meeting Visitors/Strangers: She’s friendly, but a bit cautious when people visit by the fence.

Other Dogs: She gets along fine---can protect her rawhide when chewing it.

Playfulness with other dogs: Not interested in playing with them.

Barking: She barks when hearing unfamiliar noises, but is otherwise a quiet girl.

Behavior Inside House: She’s pretty quiet inside. Loves to play with stuffies and chews on rawhides and otherwise likes to be a couch potato.

Behavior Outside in the Yard: Spurts of activity where she chases birds, then she’ll be happy to lie down on the patio for some R & R.

Behavior Away from Home (pet store, dog parks, etc): Does very well, isn’t extremely outgoing when meeting new people, but friendly and happy.

Training

Potential as Hunting Companion: She responds well to a pheasant wing, but would need to get used to gunshot sounds, as right now I think she’d start barking every time.

Agility: Unknown.

Housebreaking: Is housebroken, but may have accidents when left alone for more than 5 hours. The week when my husband was on vacation and I had to leave her the full work day, I crated her and she did wonderfully.

Crate Training: Is crate trained and will usually go in willingly. She’s currently used to be fed in her crate and goes in to wait for her food and sits pretty. Can be trusted in the house uncrated for about 5 hours (see housebreaking notes). Has never been destructive when we left her uncrated.

Leash Walking: She walks pretty nicely when on an easy-walk harness or English Slip Leash. On regular leash she pulls a bit too much. Rachael loves to go for walks. She does criss-cross a bit at times when seeing birds and may stop to go into a point.

Off-Leash/Recall: Her recall at home, inside and in the fenced backyard is wonderful. When you call her, she comes running every time. Now when she escapes the yard to go birding, that’s another story---she ignores you completely.

Health

Appetite: Great! She loves her food.

General Health: Rachael was treated for Lyme Disease. When hearing unfamiliar sounds, she will start barking, will spin and chase her tails for a few seconds. This has decreased since she’s been treated for the Lyme Disease with Doxycycline. For now she still does some spinning, but (judging from a couple of other foster dogs that did exhibited similar behavior) it may totally vanish within the next few months.

Foster Parent Evaluation of the dog

Special Qualities: We think that Rachael is a very smart girl. She’s learned the doggy door in 5 minutes and seems very observant as to what’s going on around her.

Type of Family/Home for best placement: Somebody that enjoys a happy little girl with a golden heart. This girl will blossom over a long time and learn what home life is all about. It’s rewarding to watch.

Special Requirements/Needs: None other than fence requirement.

Fence Requirements: After a month of seeming fine with our low chain link fencing, Rachael started climbing over the fence. She will need a secure high privacy fence, or invisible fencing. We are in the process of installing a cheap radio fence to keep her in the yard. She’s responded well to an Electronic collar already, that we have used in the meantime.

Additional Comments: Rachael may not be the most beautiful English Setter girl out there, but this girl has a lot of heart. She’s very affectionate and makes you smile the entire time she’s with you. She fits easily into family life and makes a wonderful companion.

Fence Requirements: In her foster home she has 6 foot fencing, cannot say how she would do with lower fencing.

Additional Comments: She is a very loving dog. She likes to sit and be cuddled and petted. If you stop petting her when she does not want you to, she will nudge your hand and let you know. We feel that she might have been abused. If Kelly does not get her walk in the afternoon and she gets the opportunity to run out the door she will take her own walk. So this is something to be aware of. Otherwise she is a great dog and will make a great addition to your home.

Special Qualities: Always has the appearance of being very happy – she has a big doggy smile and wags so hard she nearly falls over whenever she sees us, even if we’ve only been gone for an hour.

Type of Family/Home for best placement: Could go to a home with kids, cats, or other dogs, but consideration should be taken to make sure that a dominant dog wouldn’t pick on her. She needs someone to walk her daily, and a large yard to play in would be ideal.

Special Requirements/Needs: A couch to nap on =)

Fence Requirements: Any- radio fence is what we have, but she doesn’t go into the garden over a 2 foot fence.

Additional Comments: Extremely well behaved- she doesn’t jump on anyone, she is not destructive at all, and has a desire to please. She is a toy collector, but she doesn’t damage any of her collection, she like’s to chew, but has never damaged anything that is not given to her for that purpose (rawhides, bones). She is our little couch potato, and dearly loves laying on the couches and beds, but did wait until we ‘Okayed’ it before she did it at first.

Birdiness: Points, has caught a bird in the backyard before, never been trained.

Special Qualities: Active! She needs exercise daily. She loves attention too, but does her own thing when looking at a window or playing with her toys.

Type of Family/Home for best placement: She does squeeze out doors when opened and you don't pay attention, so maybe a house without kids that might do that.

Special Requirements/Needs: She requires daily exercise, at least 2 walks.

Fence Requirements: She jumps our 6 ft wood fence no problem. We don't know if an invisible fence would hold her. At this time she always needs to be on a lead.

Additional Comments: Mel's a great dog. I think she would be best fit for a couple of active people who could have older children, who would lavish her with attention and exercise. She has never been without another dog, so maybe another dog would be good, but not a must since she does LOVE attention.

Lap/Velcro Dog or Independent/ Loner: Intermediate. Likes to lie NEXT to me on the couch, but then will get up and lay across the room on another couch or chair.

Riding in Car: Very good. But likes to stand with front feet on the console between the front seats. I don’t allow dogs in front, so that’s as close to the front as she can get. I discourage the console trick.

Playful with toys? Likes soft toys to carry around, and only rarely tears them apart. Likes Nylabones for chewing.

Birdiness: Very. Also catches tweedy birds. They die, but she is still very gentle with them.

Interactions

Adults (Males-Females) in home: Great with me – female (only human in house). Loves all who come visit.

Little Kids: ADORES them.

Meeting Visitors/Strangers: Sometimes barks, but really loves visitors and strangers. Then will go lay down – sometimes next to them on the couch.

Other Dogs: Gets along with all.

Playfulness with other dogs: Playful outside, but is calm inside.

Behavior around Cats: Leaves them completely alone inside. Perhaps too interested in them outside.

Barking: Barks when playing, or when other dogs go by the house.

Behavior Inside House: Very mellow. Follows me from room to room, but loves to sleep. Alert to what’s going on outside the house. She has favorite places to sleep, and they are all soft!

Behavior Outside in the Yard: Birdy, watches for squirrels, playful. When tired, she will lay down in grass.

Behavior Away from Home (pet store, dog parks, etc): At dog parks, she runs and runs, but checks in periodically. At dog park, she cannot be prevented from going into deep mud puddles (like small ponds), lying down, and putting her whole head under to drink. This results in a bath after the park. Since all of mine do this, they all get baths after the dog park, if the puddles are still there. She likes to follow Caleigh at the dog park, but does not have to.

Sammy is afraid of thunderstorms, and doesn’t like rain. She is doing better in storms with an anxiety t-shirt (t-touch). Although she is NOT terrified, she does like to be touching me (couch or bed) when the storms come.

Training

Commands: Sit – new command for her and she is still learning it. Come – reasonably good, but not perfect. Right Here – means walk at my side. She usually chooses the right side. I use this for crossing streets and for oncoming pedestrians/runners. WALK – I use this for Caleigh, and it means DON’T PULL UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES OR YOU’RE IN BIG TROUBLE, and Sammy has decided that she knows what it means, too. I have introduced Down (as in lay down), but she hasn’t really figured it out. Wipe Paws – used when I need to wipe muddy paws as they enter the kitchen from the back yard. Sammy listens to what I say, and understands most of it.

Tricks: Stands up at chain link fence and poops standing up. She does not always poop this way, but it’s really funny when she does. She does this on her own. No commands will get her to do it.

Potential as Hunting Companion: Excellent. She was part of a hunting kennel in Benton, IL.

Agility: I have not seen any inclinations this way.

Therapy: I think that Sammy would make a great therapy dog. She might also do really well in a school program. We have one here where the kids read to a dog that comes in for that purpose. I bet that she would like that. I might volunteer her for that. It doesn’t take any special training (for me).

Housebreaking: Mostly fine, but has trouble holding it for a very long time. She does better if she gets a break in the middle of the day. Rarely, she will need to get up in the middle of the night.

Crate Training: She will crate, but prefers not to be crated. I give her a treat when she goes into the crate. She sleeps in my bedroom on a dog bed, though.

Leash Walking: Mostly great. If she gets excited, she can pull a little. Does not need a gentle leader, but will tolerate one if you put one on her.

Off-Leash/Recall: Reasonable good, but not perfect. Usually comes.

Health

Appetite: Good.

General Health: Good.

Ongoing Medication/Maintenance needed: Currently on Solid Gold’s Berry Balance supplement for urinary tract health, as she’s had a urinary tract infection a while back. Sammy’s teeth are now in pretty good condition, but they were not when she came into rescue. With raw bones and raw sweet potato, her teeth have gotten a lot cleaner. Tooth-brushing helps to keep them that way. We brush her teeth every night. She doesn’t like it much, but we keep doing it every night.

Foster Parent Evaluation of the dog

Special Qualities: Oh, so sweet. This little girl quietly wins hearts.

Type of Family/Home for best placement: She would love a home with a mom and a dad, although just one would be fine, too. She ADORES children of all ages, so if there are no children living in the home, she should have a chance to visit with some children, or have children come visit her.

Special Requirements/Needs: Sammy should be crated during the day when the family is gone for extended periods of time.

Fence Requirements: Virtually any will do. She does not challenge my 3 ½ foot chain link fence.

Additional Comments: This little girl will make any home happy. She is sweet and loving, although not terribly demonstrative. It takes her a little while to warm up to a new home, but she adjusts well. Love is something she is getting used to, but it seems like it might be a little foreign to her. This does not mean that she doesn’t want your love and attention, though. Give her a chance, and she will tell you how much you matter to her in her own quiet way.

Little Kids: Did great when we kid-tested 3 year and up. Does not jump, but will give a pointer hug, the potential to knock a small child down is there, not aggressively.

Other Dogs: Is active with his foster brother & sisters in the yard, they run around for hours if I let them.

Foster Parent Evaluation of the dog

Special Qualities: Joe is one of the sweetest of dogs I have ever fostered. He was timid when he first arrived, but has become a real buddy. He loves to cuddle, snuggle and sunbathe. It takes him a short while to warm up to men. He is not needy for attention, but will take all of it, when you have to give it. He’s so well behaved, with the exception of counter surfing, which we solved by crating him when food it out, so this has not presented a problem.

Type of Family/Home for best placement: He would do fine in just about any home. I don’t think he really cares to “play” with kids, but he will snuggle with them. He really enjoys spring to fall walks…not impressed with the snow and cold, but we have a coat for him.

Special Requirements/Needs: None

Fence Requirements: Chain link or privacy is fine. He’s not a fence jumper.

Additional Comments: Joe makes a great companion, low maintenance and very loyal and loving. Does not have a mean bone in his body. He plays well with his foster brother and sisters. HE IS SO EASY GOING.

Special Qualities: He’s very, very sweet & loving. Loves to cuddle & get lots of hugs & kisses.

Type of Family/Home for best placement: Winn would be good with or without kids. He does jump up when excited but he doesn’t jump on you, just up.

Special Requirements/Needs: He needs someone to understand some of his pointer behaviors. I’ve seen other pointers that exhibit certain repeat behaviors and such. It’s harmless and he settles down after a little while. He's worth getting to know. I‘ve not met a sweeter dog than Winn.

Fence Requirements: He will not try to jump over a fence but can dig under the fence line to escape if he sees any space he can squeeze under. He can get through a pretty small space so you have to be careful with him, watching him closely even at the dog parks. Make sure the fencing comes all the way to the ground & that he can’t squeeze out through a gate. But as time has gone by he is getting more & more attached to me & my other dogs, so the desire to run has lessened. He also listens to the e-collar.

Additional Comments: Winn is worth taking a chance on. His loving nature & sweetness are more than a pay back for any behavior issues like jumping up when excited or trying to escape under a fence. He has settled into our pack & home & we will all miss him dearly.

Agility: She would enjoy it, but she does have hip dysplasia in one hip, so it would be somewhat limited.

Appetite: Very healthy--no teeth, but she still wolfs down that kibble!

General Health: Rosie has one bad hip and one bad knee. She gets sore sometimes, but in general does very well.

Special Qualities: Rosie is grateful and dedicated. She is so happy just to be in a family. She is loyal and loving.

Type of Family/Home for best placement: She would do best in a lively home but would bond well with one or two adults as well. She has a strong sense of family but is still open to meeting new people especially if they will give her belly rubs too!

Special Requirements/Needs: Her new family will have to continue working with her on her extreme nervousness during thunder storms.

Fence Requirements: 4ft is fine. Due to her hip issues, she does not jump.
